Sum and Substance:
Thumbs Up:

Superb performance for its cost, comes with built in support for mobile broadband

Thumbs Down:

Low battery life, lacks Bluetooth.

The Whiz Kid Speaks:

HP Pavilion dv4-2155dx is powered by Intel Core i3 330M / 2.13 GHz processor, it has L3 cache of 3MB, the notebook has 4 GB DDR3 SD RAM which is expandable to 8 GB. For storing data, there is a 320 GB hard disk. Bundled optical drive is DVD+/-RW. The display size is 14.1 inches and it gives a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution. Interfaces include HDMI, eSATA, Ethernet RJ-45, USB 2.0. Bundled softwares include Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, Microsoft Works, CyberLink DVD Suite, Drivers & Utilities. The notebook runs on Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium.

Razzle Dazzle:

HP Pavilion dv4-2155dx has Espresso Black Imprint finish and looks good even though the exteriors are plasticky. Apart from the bottom, everything on this notebook is glossy and it will leave a lot of fingerprints on it. If you are a hygiene freak, you will probably be keeping a cleaning cloth close to you. The small HP logo located on the lower left side of the screen looks like an LCD. Around the keyboard, there is a perforated black metal which goes well with the lid. The sides are chrome-covered along with the touch pad and buttons. We thought this was a very attractive looking notebook with the lid having circular shapes, silver bubbles and pinstripping. The unit weighs six pounds which is a bit heavy but definitely not a backbreaker. However, we don’t think you will be carry this around much because of the weight and the 1.6 inch thickness.

Inside Dope:

HP Pavilion dv4-2155dx comes with an Intel Core i3 processor which means this laptop will handle multitasking easily. Along with the fast processor, you get 4 gigs of DDR3 memory and a fast hard disk which makes this notebook one of the best performing mainstream laptops. It is costlier than Asus U50F-RBBAG05 but HP makes up for it by giving you support for mobile broadband. Such power full hardware is bound to make the battery drain out quickly and this is why we won’t complain about the low battery life of this notebook. The claimed battery life of three and half hours didn’t turn out to be true in our tests. But if you are always close to a wall socket, we think this is a good laptop to use as a well-rounded, compact entertainment device.

There is a touch sensitive strip located at the keyboards top for volume control. Along with this, there are buttons for turning the Wi-Fi radio on and off as well as a button for muting the audio. HP Pavilion dv4-2155dx lacks other dedicated media control keys, but you get function related keys for rewind, forward, stop, play/pause. This HP notebook also comes with a remote control that can be stored in ExpressCard slot. The keyboard is comfortable to type on, but the buttons feel a bit mushy. Just like the exterior, the buttons are plastic and glossy. We are not much fan of these glossy parts; they attract fingerprints easily and hence make the notebook look ugly. We also thought the touch pad is a too small. This won’t be a problem if you are using this notebook at home because you will probably use a USB mouse. There is a small button above  the touch pad which switches it off if not in use.

The screen of the HP Pavilion dv4-2155dx is 14.1 inches big and gives a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. The screen is bright enough, icons and text are readable and movies also look good. When viewed from the sides, the picture doesn’t get as bad as other notebooks in the competition. The stereo speakers are of Altec Lansing, the quality is good and they don’t distort when you’d push it to the limit. We would have liked a little more bass. We tried the speakers with movies and music, the quality was pretty impressive. Above the screen there is a microphone and Webcam.

Connection and port assortment on the HP Pavilion dv4-2155dx is good and the manufacturer didn’t waste much space there. The goodies include HDMI port as well as USB/eSATA combo port. There is also HP proprietary expansion port if you want to connect this laptop to a HP docking station. This port probably costs you a USB port but it wasn’t the case on this notebook. For networking, there is 802.11n Wi-Fi, 10/100 Ethernet and mobile broadband with built-in Qualcomm Gobi antenna. You will have to sign up with either Verizon, Sprint or AT&T if you want to use mobile broadband but we really like this option, it lets you connect to the internet when you are on the move. The only disappointment on this machine is the absence of Bluetooth.

There are various incarnations of this dv4 but the 2155dx cannot be tweaked before purchase because it is a fixed retail configuration. If you want to change the internal components like put in more memory or swap the existing hard drive for a bigger one, it can be done after you buy it.

We tested the HP Pavilion dv4-2155dx for multitasking and were impressed with what the notebook had to offer. The speed hard disk, 4 gig of memory and Core i3 processor can handle multiple applications easily. Streaming video and audio along with a few basic tasks didn’t slow the machine down. AVCHD movies were fine even at full screen. However, this game cannot take more than just casual gaming.

HP Pavilion dv4-2155dx has a battery life of a little over two hours. The battery life is certainly disappointing and we think that the culprit behind this is the fast 7,200 rpm hard drive. With such small battery life, you will have to make sure you are always in front of a plug. We battery tests are quite grueling; you can get more out of it with casual use. Also the usage of mobile broadband technology doesn’t affect the battery life much.

HP Pavilion dv4-2155dx is comes with a one year warranty. Other help includes a toll free 24-7 support over the phone during the warranty period. You can also visit the manufacturers Website for technical assistance. There is also a FAQ database located there for manual trouble shooting. HP also offers an extended warranty but just like other vendors, the manufacturer prices it a bit high and so we don’t recommend it.

Nitty Gritty:

Fast processor along with a fast hard drive give you a excellent performance laptop. Buy it if you don’t care much about the low battery life.
