Sum and Substance:
Thumbs Up:
Well priced considering the internal components, light weight, powered by fast Core i3 chip.
Thumbs Down:
Low battery life.
The Whiz Kid Speaks:
The Asus U50F-RBBAG05 is powered by Intel® Core™ i3-330M processor it has bus speed of 1066 MHz, 2.13 GHz processor speed and 3MB L2 cache. Memory included is 4 GB DDR3 RAM, optical drive is multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support. The display is 15.6 inches big and has a resolution of 1366×768 pixels, for storing data; there is a 5400 rpm drive. Integrated graphic card is Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator HD HM55. Above the display is 1.3 megapixel Webcam.
The 8-in-1 card reader reads the following cards – Memory Stick PRO Duo formats, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick, xD-Picture Card, miniSD, Secure Digital, and MultiMediaCard. There are three USB 2.0 ports. 6-cell lithium has rated battery life is 4 hours and 39 minutes. Bundled OS is Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit operating system preinstalled.
Razzle Dazzle:
Though impressive on the outside, the Asus U50F-RBBAG05 has lamentable looks. The glossy lid attracts a lot of fingerprints easily and this makes the laptop look dirty and old. We wouldn’t call this notebook sexy looking.
Exteriors of the Asus U50F-RBBAG05 are ugly but the manufacturer makes up for it by giving an attractive matte brown finish on the number pad (yes,. there is a number pad too) and the keyboard. Above the keyboard there is the speaker grille and two buttons there relate to Asus’s quick launch OS and the power button. The notebook is powered by a six cell battery, it doesn’t create a bulge on the back and this makes the laptop look thin. Just like some Vaio laptops, the power port is located on the hinge.
Inside Dope:
Asus has given us two computers which have the same configuration apart from the processor. There is this notebook which costs $649 and comes with an Intel Core i3 processor. The other offering is Asus UL50VT-RBBBK05 which has the same Nvidia switchable graphics, 15.6 inch display and costs $729 but it doesn’t the processor inside is neither is old and slow which makes the laptop sluggish.

Asus U50F-RBBAG05 looks better than UL50, the design has been updated, the touch pad is glossier and larger with the curved edge look. This notebook is not thin and light but you won’t notice the difference much, the U50F is thicker than the UL50VT by only 0.3 inches.
User yearning for speed will definitely go for the Asus U50F-RBBAG05 which is powered by a fast processor. It will fulfill your speed expectations and the price too is reasonable. We will recommend you to go for the UL50VT if you can sacrifice speed for gaming graphics, portability and better looks. It would have been great if Asus provided all these four features in a single laptop but lets not get too ambitious. If Asus had given an i3 processor along with the graphics card, then the price would have increased significantly. For this price tag of $650, we will say it is hard to find such a laptop.
The keyboard of the Asus U50F-RBBAG05 is just like Apple’s Mac Book Air but we wished there was better spacing between the keys. The number keypad is there on the right but it feels like the buttons are forced on it. We thank Asus for giving us a multi-touch enabled trackpad but this is again ruined by the single rocker button for the mouse. We prefer two separate buttons like standard notebooks, it gives better ergonomics.
The two buttons above the keyboard might confuse a newbie. In fact, it is power button and the quick launch OS button. The latter opens up Express Gate Splashtop OS environment which gives you essential applications like e-mail and Web browser. We don’t think highly of such quick launch OSes primarily because we don’t switch off our laptops, we just keep it in hibernate/sleep mode. And secondly, Windows 7 boots up really fast so you don’t need a ‘quick launch’ OS. When the computer is in Windows 7, the quick launch OS button gives you power saving features when pressed.
The screen of the Asus U50F-RBBAG05 is 15.6 inches long and gives a resolution of 1366×768 pixels, it is passable, we would have liked a full-HD resolution but that would hike the price. Videos and images looked bright and crisp on the display. Speakers are usually located on the bottom but here they are above the keyboard. The speaker quality was impressive as long as you don’t expect audiophile quality. Unfortunately, the speakers lack bass.
Asus U50F-RBBAG05 isn’t as slim like UL50VT but on the added space, you get some port goodies. Both ExpressCard slot and eSATA port is disappearing in laptops these days but Asus managed to squeeze it in here. However, the UL50F doesn’t come with Bluetooth.
Asus U50F-RBBAG05 is powered by Intel Core i3 M330 processor which is a new offering from Intel and it’s quite impressive. We tested it for multitasking and speed performance and we didn’t have much to complain here. Priced at $650 we think this laptop is great value for money and this is the main advantage it has. True, that the U50F doesn’t have discrete graphic card but still we could play casual games easily. Performance in video streaming and video playback tests made us drool. We would recommend this laptop for every need except high end gaming.
Asus U50F-RBBAG05 ran for a little over two and half hours in our battery drain tests. The six cell battery gives a less back up than what we’d expect especially with the power efficient chip. Our battery tests are grueling; you can get more out of the battery with moderate use like Web browsing and music playback. But we expected at least three hours of battery life here. Anyways, if you are going places with this laptop, make sure you pack in the power adapter as well.
Asus U50F-RBBAG05 comes with a one year warranty which covers labor and parts. Asus has improved its Website but it still has a long way to go if it wants to compete with bigwigs like Dell and Sony Vaio. Toll free technical help isn’t 24-7, you can get to it from Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. PST.
Nitty Gritty:
Asus U50F-RBBAG05 is a great value deal considering the price and the inclusion of Core i3 processor. We have no major issues with this notebook and we’ll recommend this to you if you are looking for anything other than high end gaming.
